Should You Be Worried About Sinus Pain and Pressure?

If you experience frequent sinus pain and pressure, you already know how it can impact your life and how you feel. Continuous headaches, fatigue, and other symptoms can keep you from enjoying your life. Your ENT specialist can help you feel better.

What You Need To Know About Sinus Pain and Pressure

You may be experiencing sinus pain and pressure because of:

  • Exposure to a virus, bacteria, or fungus
  • Structural abnormalities in your nasal passages or sinuses
  • Exposure to an allergen causing inflammation in your sinuses
  • Polyps or other growths in your nasal passages or sinuses

Sinus pain and pressure can have several accompanying signs and symptoms, including:

  • Facial and jaw pain
  • Headaches and body aches
  • Nasal and sinus congestion
  • Pain behind your eyes
  • Fatigue and fever

For mild occasional sinus pain and pressure, you may be able to get relief if you:

  • Take over-the-counter decongestant and antihistamine medication
  • Take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory and pain medication
  • Apply a cold towel to your forehead

So, when should you be worried about sinus pain and pressure? You should visit your ENT specialist if you have:

  • Frequent episodes of sinus pain and pressure
  • Severe sinus pain and pressure
  • Sinus pain and pressure which doesn’t resolve or are getting worse

Your ENT specialist can provide effective treatments to clear up sinus pressure and pain, including:

  • Prescription-strength antihistamines to relieve sinus pain and pressure due to allergies
  • Prescription-strength decongestants to clear blocked nasal and sinus passages
  • Antibiotics to eliminate infection
  • Prescription steroid nasal sprays to decrease inflammation

Your ENT specialist may also recommend a procedure known as balloon sinuplasty if your sinus pain and pressure are severe and chronic. Balloon sinuplasty uses a thin tube with a balloon at one end. The tube is inserted into your nostril and guided up into your sinuses. When a blockage is reached, the balloon is inflated, clearing out the blockage. The balloon is then deflated and removed.
